Re-imagining a Residential Street
The plan would first and foremost involve reclaiming the street for the pedestrian, making a more pleasant urban experience. Alternating bump-outs down the road force traffic to follow the speed limit, create more sheltered spaces for parked cars, and allow for the planting of small trees.
The front door of the street is 3733 W Vliet Street, an old and currently unoccupied home, neighboring a storefront and a park directly to its east. The home could be repurposed into a community cultural center, housing a library, music room, and offices for the neighborhood association. The storefront would be restored, but the back of that building would be gutted and turned into a stage for an outdoor performance space. Then, the surrounding yard may be transformed into a green space that will flow across N 37th Place into the existing park.
Further down the road the home on 1331 N 37th Pl could be repurposed into a food service building, potentially for storing and selling food grown in the empty lots-turned gardens of the neighborhood. The property to the south could easily serve as community garden space, or could be used to build another community oriented building.
Last but certainly not least, the homes on the corner of N 37th Pl and McKinley (1300-1302 and 1304-1306) and the surrounding park would over time become a new community hub. The park would be revitalized to include a new play ground, basket ball court, garden space, and green space for community events. Click on the "architecture" button of this project to learn more!
